How to Make Sure Windows Is Done Updating Black Screen
Hello,
Thank you for using Windows 10.
We have been seeing black screen issues of several types after upgrading to Windows 10. The main causes observed so far are driver issues, output to unexpected port, and possibly also issues with the Lock Screen app. Please use these steps:

If you see the black screen only after sign-in and you can see a mouse cursor:

While at the black screen, try using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Task Manager.

If it becomes visible, try finding LockAppHost.exe on the Details tab and ending the task.

If this resolves the black screen, then perform the following Powershell command-
Re-register all Windows Store Apps by running the following commands in a CMD window started as Administrator (Press Windows+X > select Windows Powershell(admin) ):
PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
"$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Repair damaged Windows files:
Run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool which fixes the Windows corruption error if there are any. Follow the steps: -
Press Windows+X .

Click on Command Prompt (Admin ).

Type the command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and hit Enter.

Run Sfc /scannow
System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.
You can follow the steps in the following article:

If you're not able to perform the above tasks, then try these:
Try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

Press and hold the shift key while clicking on Restart at the login Screen (Bottom right corner) > T roubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart >>Choose Enable Safe mode with networking .
Check Device Manager and look for Display Adapters

If you see 2 items under Display Adapters, disable to integrated video card (e.g. Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon HD 4200) and restart. (try vice versa if it does not work)

If you see 1 item under Display Adapters, rollback the driver or uninstall the display adapter in Device Manager, and enable the option to delete driver software.
Check the PC or display adapter manufacturer's site for an updated driver.

I am having a similar problem on my Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 which was running on Windows 7. Rolling back the display adaptor from 'Intel (R) HD Graphics' back to 'Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor' sorts out the problem, however every time Windows Update takes place it reloads the driver for 'Intel (R) HD graphics', reverting my computer back to black screen! Has anyone got any solutions to stop this happening without switching off automatic updates? Thank you

Are you kidding me????? I am a regular person, not a computer geek.... I don't understand one thing you have said in this reply....I have a fairly new computer, and the windows 10 anniversary update has ruined it. Microsoft has ruined my computer... are they going to figure out the cause and fix it.... it goes black, shuts down, and does not reboot on its own, I have to restart. I would tell them to buy me a new computer, but will the update do the same to the new one.

If I shut down my PC, I have login issues. Credentials don't show up - immediately*. I updated in December 2016 to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. What I found was that the login page takes a few minutes to display on powering up the device, after which, access is gained normally, and the machine runs as expected.
